Tuberculous arthritis

Phemister's triad

Classic description of tuberculous arthritis:

1. Severe juxta-articular osteoporosis (hyperaemia).
2. Peripheral bony erosions (marginal).
3. Gradual narrowing of joint space (cartilage is preserved until late stages, unlike pyogenic where it is destroyed early).
